What to Expect

The terrain surrounding Ghost Ranch holds a rare harmony of contrasts: ancient red rock formations, arid plateaus, volcanic remnants, and the quiet movement of the Chama River nourishing a ribbon of cottonwood bosque below. Rising above it all is the iconic Cerro Pedernal, the flat-topped mountain immortalized by Georgia O’Keeffe, standing watch over the land.

This session invites you to slow down, observe, and create in direct relationship with the landscape. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, you will be guided through the process of capturing the warmth, depth, and atmosphere of Northern New Mexico.

Your session includes a full-day pass to explore Ghost Ranch and immerse yourself in the surrounding beauty after painting.

• Step-by-step plein air painting instruction
• Guidance on color mixing, creating depth, and capturing the unique light of the New Mexico landscape
• Techniques for translating the textures, shapes, and atmosphere of the desert onto canvas
• A relaxed, slow-paced creative atmosphere surrounded by nature

Weather & Environment:
Ghost Ranch sits in the high desert, where conditions can change throughout the day.

Expect bright sun, open skies, and the possibility of shifting winds or passing clouds that bring new colors and movement to the landscape.

Average morning temperatures during these sessions are typically around 65–70°F.

We recommend bringing:
• Layers for changing temperatures
• A hat and sunscreen for high-desert sun
• Water and comfortable walking shoes
